The Local Cluster is a cluster near the western edge of Alliance space, and is the home cluster of the human species. The cluster was located beyond the southern border of Inner Council space by 2100 CE, and the Council was prohibited from exploring it due to the conditions of the Treaty of Etamis, which outlined non-Council/Terminus space as belonging to the Attican Traverse. While the Batarian People's Republic had come very close to claiming the system in the late 1300s CE, all their gains had been reversed following their decisive defeat in the Quarian-Batarian War, which quickly brought an end to their empire, and their hopes of claiming those clusters. As such, humanity was free to develop on its own, going undiscovered until their first contact with the turians at Relay 314, and the brief war that followed. Afterwards, the Local cluster became the center of human civilization in the Milky Way Galaxy.

The Local cluster was invaded by the Reapers shortly after the Fall of Khar'Shan during the Reaper War, where it very quickly fell to the overwhelming invading enemy force, and would remain under Reaper occupation until the end of the conflict. The New Council made attempts to invade it during the Post-Apocalyptic War, but most of these attempts failed to break through the powerful Anderson Line, and never made it to the cluster itself. The cluster has remained the capital of the Systems Coalition for centuries after its creation, even after the Dominion Civil War.
