The Galactic Dominion, also known as the Dominion, the Attican Dominion, the Human-Quarian Imperium and sometimes, but rarely, as the Terra-Rannochian Empire, was an imperial and authoritarian intergovernmental political-military alliance that encompassed every species within former Council, Alliance, Batarian and Geth space, including the entire Attican Traverse, as well as small segments from the lower right side of the former Terminus Systems; this area was known as Dominion space, and represented one of the three major alliances in the galaxy folowing the aftermath of the Post-Apocalyptic War, alongside the Titan Covenant and the Sanctum. It had its roots as far back as the Terra-Rannochian Pact between the Systems Coalition and the Republic of Rannoch in 2191 CE, growing until both Earth and Rannoch seceded from the New Council and formed the Dominion, unifying their territories under one banner. Following the end of their war with the New Council and the Covenant, this territory would grow with the occupation of former Council worlds, and the addition of the Krogan Confederacy into the Dominion, turning the Human-Quarian Empire into the single largest power in the Milky Way galaxy.
In 2217 CE, the Dominion made plans to expand even further by initiating Operation Silent Zealot, with the intent of invading and destroying the Covenant, absorbing their territory, and then forcing the Sanctum to accept annexation as well, allowing for complete galactic dominance. Unbeknownst to many, the Dominion and its founding was the result of the machinations of Prometheus, a resurgent Cerberus organization. While Prometheus had initially started with the intent of securing Coalition dominance in the Dominion, these beliefs gave way to humano-quario-krogan supremacy instead. Regardless of this, the Dominion, despite its gargantuan military-industrial complex and economic might, eventually fell apart when Prometheus' operations were exposed by a resurrected Marcus L. Shepard. The Dominion quickly descended into civil war, and within a year, it collapsed, unable to handle the outbreaks of civil war across almost every single system within its domain, which had spread like wildfire. The Dominion would later be replaced by the more democratic Unified Galactic Republics.
Several post-civil war attempts have been made to attempt the re-establishment of the Dominion. Many Dominion rump states continued to exist for a short time after the war, most notably the unrecognized Dominion Republic of Rannoch (which ironically did not hold nor have any relation to Rannoch) and the Shepardist Empire (founded by someone claiming to be Marcus L. Shepard), although none of these lasted much longer than a decade or two. Prometheus attempted a second resurgence in 2311 CE under the name Bucephalus, but was defeated in a series of brief battles collectively known as the Bucephalus Uprising, where it would never again challenge the UGR directly and had its warfighting capability crippled. The Neo-Dominion Reformist Alliance attempted to overthrow the Virminian government in at least two wars, wanting to establish a pro-Dominion government, but was defeated both times. The NDRA launched a third and successful attempt to seize power, establishing a military dictatorship known as the Fifty-four day dictatorship. Only twelve days into the NDRA's control of the brief new republic, they laid claim to the former territory that belonged to the Dominion Republic of Rannoch, which had collapsed sixteen years before, and when the quarians refused to hand it over, they deployed military forces and annexed the region by force, overwhelming the few quarian marine detachments there. Sworn to uphold the peace, the UGR sent in a joint-species fleet to retake the annexed colonies, and despite several naval defeats, eventually defeated the Virminian occupation forces. A violent uprising overthrew the NDRA government, hanging their leaders in the streets and leading to brutal atrocities known as the Rape of Williams. The NDRA put down the uprising, agreeing to negotiate a peace settlement with the UGR if they were allowed to retain power, but after being ordered to unconditionally surrender, the NDRA stepped down, with their surviving leaders fleeing into permanent exile. With the collapse of the NDRA, the last remaining Dominion rump states were wiped out, although many remnant splinter faction, and even a few successor states, would attempt to rise up over the course of the next few centuries, all of which would eventually either be suppressed or collapse under their own weight.
