- "The apex of evolution; the final byproduct of the conclusion I made. The Leviathans asked for a solution, I found it. From the ashes of a broken galaxy, I forged the first of the Nazara. Their numbers darkened the sky of every world. In the language of my creators, Nazara means 'the perfected.' And through the fires of our purge, we created perfection."
- — The Great Intelligence.
The Reapers, known to the geth as the Old Machines, were a sentient/sapient synthetic species of starships originating from dark space. They only appeared in the Milky Way to wipe out galactic life, and they then proceed to leave the galaxy until the next cycle. They originated as the 'perfected' byproduct of the Proto-Reapers, which had in turn been created by the Great Intelligence as a solution to the Great Evolutionary Crisis. Enigmatic, ruthless and entirely uninterested in anything but their genocidal goals, the Reapers were the largest threat the galaxy had ever faced, and more powerful than any of the galactic civilizations who faced them. However, finally, in the Reaper War, the forces of the asari cycle won a costly but decisive victory against them at the Battle of Sol and, with the activation of the Crucible, the Reapers were destroyed once and for all. As such, the Reapers are now, as a species, considered extinct.
