The Avenger assault rifle was a fully automatic heat sink-based block-fed assault rifle manufactured by Elkoss Combine. Manufactured and entering service in 2159 CE, the Avenger assault rifle became one of the most commonplace assault rifles in the galaxy, and ultimately became the main service rifle of the Systems Alliance Army and Systems Alliance Marine Corps following the Alliance's dissatisfaction with their homegrown Lancer assault rifle. Despite having the worst accuracy of any assault rifle in the galaxy, the Avenger was highly modular, capable of being modified on the go and with an array of modifications designed and built for it, allowing a user to circumvent these flaws. The rifle held decent armor and shield penetration capabilities, had manageable recoil and could fire over long distances, effectively cancelling out its other issues, and making it one of the most iconic weapons of the Alliance military despite being a volus-designed weapon. Even Cerberus briefly equipped their commandos with the rifle, although they would later replace it with their homegrown Gorgon model.

The M-8 Avenger was the direct successor to the Avenger, designed and built in the wake of the introduction of the thermal clip in 2184 CE and the revolution in gun design that followed it, with Elkoss wishing to bring the Avenger into the modern day. Whilst the original Avenger was discontinued, it effectively lived on in the M-8 Avenger well into the modern age, the same basic concept being maintained whilst the block-fed mechanics were swapped out for a thermal clip-fed system instead.
