The Lancer assault rifle was a fully automatic heat sink-based block-fed assault rifle manufactured by Hahne-Kedar Solutions. Manufactured and entering service in 2151 CE, the Lancer assault rifle was designed to be the standard issue service rifle of both the Systems Alliance Army and Systems Alliance Marine Corps, possessing decent stopping power but pitiful accuracy and only moderate penetration. Built during a time where the Alliance was only just getting a handle on how to manufacture weapons using the prothean technology reverse-engineered from the Mars Archives, the Lancer possessed an array of flaws that would be ironed out in later iterations of human-designed assault rifles, with poor recoil handling, significant bullet spread, downgraded performance over longer distances, and minimal armor penetration: despite this, the weapon had a good heat mitigation system in place, and could shred kinetic barriers easily enough when put downrange, but longer bursts led to wild recoil, even amongst seasoned professionals. Following the First Contact War where this performance was only further exacerbated, the Alliance began seeking alternatives, eventually landing on the Avenger assault rifle of Elkoss Combine. While the Avenger's base accuracy was even worse than the Lancer, its modular utility and ability to heavily modified made it stand out from the Lancer, and what it lacked in accuracy it ultimately made up for everywhere else when compared to the Lancer. Despite the Alliance's cancelled contract, Hahne-Kedar continued to produce the Lancer for the wider galaxy, where it found use amongst criminal groups and terrorist organizations, with Cerberus briefly equipping their commandos with them before developing their own Gorgon model to replace it.
The M-7 Lancer was the direct successor to the Lancer, a prototype variation of the original Lancer designed in the wake of the introduction of the thermal clip in 2184 CE and the revolution in gun design that followed it, but due to various circumstances, the M-7 was never introduced into galaxy-wide circulation, with only a hundred left following the Reaper War and considered a rare specialty item.
