Artemis Tau is a cluster located near the southeastern edge of Alliance space, closest to Hegemony space. In the asari cycle, Artemis Tau lay far to the southeast of Inner Council space, and thus was never explored for the potential of colonization by the Council races: however, the cluster was swiftly annexed by the Batarian People's Republic during their expansion throughout the 13th Century CE, leading to a steady period of batarian colonization of the cluster. After their defeat in the Quarian-Batarian War, the cluster was given up, with the Treaty of Pragia forcing them to give up the cluster, among their other conquests. Artemis Tau would not be colonized again until the 2160s, when the Systems Alliance expanded into the Skyllian Verge: this colonization effort would be one of many factors that would trigger the Skyllian Blitz, as the batarian military believed they were being surrounded on all sides.

Artemis Tau would be subject to an incursion by geth heretic forces during the Eden Prime War, although it would go largely untouched by the Reaper War. The cluster transferred to Systems Coalition control after the Alliance's dissolution, and remained as such centuries later.

The cluster is named after one of the Ancient Greek deities of the ancient Greek pantheon known as Artemis, who was the goddess of the hunt, the wilderness, wild animals, the Moon and chastity. Tau is the 19th letter of the Greek alphabet. In essence, the cluster's name means "19th Artemis".
