The Normandy-class stealth frigate was a classification of frigate that served in the Systems Alliance Navy from 2183 CE to 2191 CE, in the Systems Coalition Navy from 2191 CE to 2218 CE, and in the Virminian Navy from 2253 CE to 2310 CE. The vessel, during its time period, utilized the state-of-the-art IES stealth system and Tantalus Drive Core, both of which were prototype technologies. This made the ship the most advanced in the galaxy at the time, as its stealth capabilities allowed it to hide its emissions and perform stealth reconnaissance and rapid deployment that the STG couldn't do. The technology was quickly outdated by the geth however, and by 2207 CE, the class was replaced by its superior successor, the Normandy II-class. While the Normandy-class is officially classified as a frigate-class vessel, the ship's size and profile more closely resemble a heavy corvette, and the frigate classification is owing to the vessel's purpose, tonnage and armament. This "grey area" of classification would also afflict its successor, the Normandy II-class, which was classified by Cerberus as a heavy stealth frigate, despite having the significantly larger profile of a destroyer and the firepower of a heavy cruiser.
Ships of the Stalingrad subclass continued to operate for the duration of the Post-Apocalyptic War, but once the war ended, they were mothballed, pending scrapping. Several Stalingrad-class frigates that were mothballed over Pahhur were claimed by the Rannoch division of the DDF during the Dominion Civil War and were quickly brought back into active service, and outfitted with modern improvements. These ships would later be used in the early stages of the Rannochian theater by the DDF to combat Dominion forces trying to claim two geth superdreadnoughts, the Legion's Gift and Pilgrim's Homecoming, over Rannoch. After the war, they were sold to the Virmire Republic as surplus materials, and would remain in service to the Virminian Navy until 2310 CE.
The class was named after the Battle of Normandy of the Second World War.
