The Katana shotgun was a pump-action heat sink-based block-fed shotgun manufactured by Ariake Technologies. Manufactured and entering service in 2170 CE, the Katana shotgun was an inexpensive shotgun designed for military and PMC use, finding service within the Systems Alliance Marine Corps and Systems Alliance Army, as well as other major interstellar militaries. The weapon could fire a single high velocity shell per pump, equal to one shot every 1.5 seconds, with fairly high accuracy even at longer ranges, but prone to overheating quickly. The shotgun was used by Cerberus' commandos prior to them replacing it with their homegrown Hydra model, although Cerberus kept a stockpile of the weapon due to its reliability in combat: the only real downside to the Katana was its recoil, which had a tendency to buck upwards violently with every shot if not mitigated efficiently.

The M-23 Katana is a direct successor to the Katana, designed and built in the wake of the introduction of the thermal clip in 2184 CE and the revolution in gun design that followed it, with Ariake wishing to bring the Katana into the modern day. Oddly enough, the design of the M-23 Katana differed from its predecessor, with the original Katana's design being used for the M-27 Scimitar, while the new M-23 design more closely resembled the design pattern used by the Storm shotgun. Whilst the original Katana was discontinued, it effectively lived on in the M-23 Katana well into the modern age, the same basic concept being maintained whilst the block-fed mechanics were swapped out for a thermal clip-fed system instead. A small upgrade was made to the M-23 to make the weapon semi-automatic, increasing its fire rate from the original Katana.
