The Nybaen-class destroyer was a classification of destroyer that served in the Navy of the Republics from 2010 CE to 2200 CE, and was the successor to the Asfinphea-class. Being that destroyers are the mainstays of the asari's naval forces, the Nybaen-class holds true to the asari naval philosophy of waging hit-and-run tactics over prelonged battles of attrition. While typically placed with dreadnoughts and cruisers to act as escorts against corvettes, fighters, interceptors and frigates, they could be deployed in full-scale engagements, where they could duck into an enemy formation, quickly deal enough damage to harass them and then quickly jump out. This tactic made the Nybaen-class a favourite among asari admirals, who found the destroyer very nimble in combat, possessing weaponry to match and being capable of making precision FTL jumps that the Asfinphea-class just couldn't do.
The Nybaen-class was deployed on the frontlines of the asari's war with the Reapers, and despite being heavily outgunned, they were easily able to outmaneuver the larger, bulkier Reaper ships. As such, they were often deployed in wolf packs, hunting down and harassing Reaper fleets. However, due to the stagnated and arrogant nature of asari military philosophy and their perceived invincibility, the asari leadership quickly became convinced they could win the war with these tactics: proven wrong later during the Fall of Thessia. After the war, the Nybaen-class' simple design allowed it to be mass produced quickly, but by 2200 CE, it was replaced by the newer Phafinna-class, which was specifically designed and suited for waging war.
