The Gargoyle-class corvette, known during earlier concept stages as the Dagger-class and as the Chupacabra-class under Cerberus, was a classification of corvette that served in the Systems Alliance Navy from 2149 CE to 2160 CE, and the Cerberus Navy from 2160 CE to 2185 CE. The vessel was unpopular, even for its time period, as it was seen as unwieldy and often unspaceworthy, with reports of drive core failures and weapon systems seizing up; one particular test run of the SSV David ended in disaster. They saw minimal action in the First Contact War, and were decommissioned a year later, with most of them being stripped of their weapons and sold on the market. Cerberus purchased a substantial amount, and by 2183 CE, the bulk of their fleet was made of modified variants of them dubbed the Chupacabra-class. By 2186 CE, they had all been decommissioned from Cerberus as well, replaced with newer, more up to date corvettes based on the Alliance's later Mermaid design, the successor to the Gargoyle-class.
The class was named after the creatures known as "gargoyles" that are often part of European folklore, fitting the Alliance habit of naming their corvette classes after creatures of Earth folklore.
