The Mermaid-class corvette was a classification of corvette that served in the Systems Alliance Navy from 2159 CE to 2191 CE, in the Systems Coalition Navy from 2191 CE to 2225 CE, and as a modified variant in the Cerberus Navy from 2185 CE to 2186 CE. Meant as a substantial improvement over its predecessor, the Gargoyle-class, the Mermaid-class removed the flaws present in the Gargoyle design and also incorporated new design elements that were introduced throughout the Alliance Navy during its fleet-wide post-First Contact War modernization process in an effort to bring the Alliance Navy up to speed with its neighbours. Nearly 700 ships of the class would be built and commissioned throughout its life cycle, owing to the steadfast reliability of the vessel and its construction as a ship designed to remain in service for decades: the ship was built to be extremely modular, unlike the Gargoyle-class which had proven to be far too difficult to modify and upgrade as its life cycle would require. The Mermaid-class could be manned by a very small crew, and its lack of sufficient armament was made up for in speed, maneveurability and sturdiness, and this resulted in the ship enjoying a very long service life in comparison to its larger compatriots, and especially in regards to its incredibly short-lived predecessor. The Mermaid-class was given plenty of chances to prove itself, and saw action in the Skyllian Blitz, Eden Prime War, the Counter-piracy campaign of 2184 CE, the Reaper War, the Border War, Post-Apocalyptic War and the Terra-Rannochian War. The ship was modified and equipped with new technology as its life cycle continued, making it pertinent in each of the combat situations that it faced, regardless of its age: the ship performed just as well in the Post-Apocalyptic War as it had in the Skyllian Blitz.
Inspired heavily by the Mermaid-class, the Systems Coalition eventually proposed a new design for its replacement in 2219 CE, which would later be named the Wendigo-class. The new class remained true to the design philosophy and purpose of the Mermaid-class, but with a rebranding to a "stratospherical combat ship" to better represent its new role in combating anti-access and asymmetric threats whilst sitting comfortably in the stratosphere of a planet in support of combat operations, much in the same vein of the littoral combat ships of Earth's 21st century US Navy. With the commissioning and construction of 150 of the new Wendigo-class ships, the Mermaid-class was finally decommissioned in 2225 CE, with all their hulks scrapped and the materials re-purposed to build the replacement Wendigo fleet. 200 of these new Wendigo vessels would be acquired for Prometheus, and would see extensive action during the Terra-Rannochian War and the Dominion Civil War.
The class was named after the creatures known as "mermaid" that are often part of Near East, European, Asian and African folklore.
