- "I'm certainly not the brightest insect, but its usually the cowardly ones that live over the courageous. I'd rather live a coward than die a forgotten hero."
- — Zach Walsh
Lance Corporal Zach Walsh was a marine in the Systems Alliance Marine Corps who served in Charlie Squad, a unit of the 17th Shock Troops Company. Born on New Canton, Zach had problems with low self-esteem and intellectual lethargy, issues that plagued him all the way through his schooling. His parents, being extremely rich, attempted to get him enrolled in numerous programs to hasten his educational progress, but nothing ever worked, and they eventually resorted to signing him up to the marines, hoping to toughen him up. With their network of contacts, they forged academic results and documents to ensure him entry: while marine recruiters suspected Walsh wasn't eligible, their concerns were overlooked due to a substantial need for manpower among the marines in order to prepare the Alliance for what it believed to be inevitable war with the batarians. Zach was posted on Ferris Fields, where he trained with Charlie squad, and only just barely made the requirements for assignment to the marines: his peers however, especially Marcus L. Shepard, made it clear that they held contempt for the man, especially given Zach's blatant displays of cowardice in numerous live-fire field exercises.
Upon assignment to the 52nd Valhalla Garrison, Zach's behaviour improved, although this was later pinned on the lack of any combat action, given Elysium's relative security in Alliance space. This changed when the batarians attacked in 2176 CE, with Zach immediately recommending a full tactical retreat. When he was assigned to help the evacuation of civilians, Zach fled, hoping to escape into the fields, although he was later captured post-battle by Alliance guardsmen and court-martialed for desertion and dereliction of duty. Zach was executed the following day, due to wartime rules regarding desertion.
