- "The time is long past for us to move on. We can't wonder the stars forever, and a war would be suicide. We need to face facts...we need a new world."
- — Ysin'Mal making his case to the Conclave for the Idenna to embark on its four-year expedition to search for a new homeworld.
Captain Ysin'Mal pav Rannoch (formerly known as Ysin'Mal nar Xewan and Ysin'Mal vas Idenna) was the captain of the QMFV Idenna and a member of the Migrant Fleet's civilian Conclave government. Born on the QMFV Xewan into a clan known for its skilled artisans, Ysin'Mal started life wanting to pursue a career in art, having a passion for painting and inspired by old paintings of Rannoch during the quarian golden age, desperately wanting, along with many other quarians, to reclaim their legacy and return to their old homeworld. After completing his pilgrimage however, Ysin'Mal was said to have returned a changed man, no longer believing in the traditionalist view of reclaiming the homeworld but firmly falling into the Pe'geth political minority who supported finding a new homeworld and supported taking responsibility for the quarian's role in attempted genocide against the geth during the war. While still passionate about art, Ysin'Mal wished to pursue more political power in the Conclave to push his ideas, and in 2159 CE he would become captain over his ship, the Idenna, and be elected to the Conclave, where he had a theater to debate and discuss his beliefs, showing solidarity in support of Admiral Zaal'Koris, the only member of the Admiralty Board who was a Pe'geth member and the first in over a century. As time went on, Ysin'Mal began pushing the concept of an expedition to find new worlds to colonize, despite quarian failure to do so in the past as a result of Council interference and sanctions, believing their future lied in previously uncharted regions. It was Ysin'Mal and others like him who finally got the New Home program approved in 2182 CE, a political victory that only further emboldened Ysin'Mal to keep pushing for even more, wanting approval for the Idenna to leave the Fleet on a four-year expedition. In 2184 CE, Lemm'Shal, a pilgrim wishing to join the Idenna crew, brought four humans to the ship to seek refuge, with one of them, Kahlee Sanders, famous for her investigation into Saren Arterius. Impressed by this find and spending several days in deep discussion with Kahlee, Ysin'Mal approved Lemm's request to join his crew shortly before Cerberus boarded and attacked the ship, using the captured Cyniad as a trojan horse and with help from exile and traitor Golo'Mekk. Ysin'Mal, initially stunned by the brazen attack, personally led the ship's security in repelling the attack, an action that only gained him further renown in the Conclave and respect from his already loyal crew.
The attack, while defeated, ultimately resulted in the deaths of 57 civilians, a massacre that resonated throughout the Fleet and sparked immense anger and outrage from the quarian people, who cried out for blood, with Cerberus having made a permanent enemy with the quarian people. Ysin'Mal used the incident as an opportunity to get his expedition approved, arguing that such an attack was only made possible by their Fleet's continued insistence on making themselves an open target, and that with a homeworld such an attack might have been less likely. The Idenna's mission was finally approved, and Ysin'Mal would command the ship during its planned four year journey. In 2186 CE, two years in, the ship was attacked by a batarian slave ship, but the attack was once again repulsed and the slaver ship captured and gifted to Gillian Grayson and Hendel Mitra to aid in their mission to avenge Gillian's father. Not long after, Ysin'Mal was ordered to return to the Fleet, his mission cancelled, learning to his dismay that the Flotilla, with the Reaper threat looming on the horizon, had decided that finding a new world would take too long and, with this fear, the Han'Gerrel was able to win enough votes from the Conclave to support war with the geth. Despite being furious at the decision, Ysin'Mal's duty to his people overrided his beliefs and he heeded the return order, with the Idenna acting as a support and logistics vessel for the invasion. After the war's conclusion, Ysin'Mal continued to command the Idenna through the Reaper War and after, but in 2201 CE he finally decided to retire, handing over command to his XO and retiring to his home on Rannoch where he would later pass away in 2238 CE.
