The Volkov sniper rifle was a semi-automatic heat sink-based block-fed sniper rifle manufactured by Rosenkov Materials. Manufactured and entering service in 2172 CE, the Volkov sniper rifle was developed for use by private military corporations and independent contractors. The Volkov sniper rifle was the second most powerful sniper rifle in the galaxy at the time, second only to the HMWSR sniper rifle, possessing a moderate accuracy but incredible range and armor penetration, punching straight through heavy armor and even krogan in a single hit. The weapon's recoil required a stabilization mount, but was capable of acting as both an anti-personnel and a anti-vehicle weapon. The weapon was, in design, succeeded by the M-97 Viper following the introduction of thermal clips in 2184 CE, which replaced block-fed weapons wholesale across the entire galaxy following the Battle of the Citadel.
The M-97 Viper is a direct successor to the Volkov, designed and built in the wake of the introduction of the thermal clip in 2184 CE and the revolution in gun design that followed it, with Rosenkov wishing to bring the Volkov into the modern day. The M-97 Viper would completely supplant the Volkov across the entire galaxy, going on to become a mainstay of numerous interstellar militaries, mercenary organizations and police tactical teams.
