"You are safe for now, but you must act quickly. Soon, nowhere will be safe."
— Vigil to the Normandy squad

Vigil was a Templar-type virtual-imprint intelligence that was in charge of Trakkar Capital's defenses, military contingencies, countermeasures and the Ilos Archives. Vigil was constructed and integrated by the prothean military into the Ilos Archives facility, charged with maintaining its various defensive armaments, communications networks and cyberwarfare suites. Being a Templar-type military VI, Vigil was extremely advanced and reliable, as was seen during the Metacon Wars. As such, Vigil was entrusted with near-total administration of the facility's many defenses and contingencies, only requiring last minute approval from the Head Sage, Ksad Ishan, and the present Warrior-General. Vigil was given an instrumental role in the Conduit project, carefully monitoring the project on all ends.

When the Citadel fell in the initial wave of the Reaper invasion in 60101 BCE, Vigil immediately initiated an encoded military contingency triggered by the event and immediately self-destructed all comm buoys within the system, including any backup communications systems on the surface. All power was rerouted from Trakkar Capital, which was swiftly abandoned, and all defense systems were put on standby. This action, while intended for use against a Metacon assault, ended up saving Ilos, as the Reapers were left unaware of the prothean presence on the planet. Surviving military and civilian personnel were placed into stasis until the Reaper harvest was over, with Vigil left to administrate. Centuries later however, all military personnel had perished, and over three quarters of the scientists had died as well. Before leaving for the Citadel, Ksad Ishan, with the Prothean Empire long gone, committed what was considered illegal under the Empire, and mentally imprinted himself upon Vigil, imbuing it with his personality and memories so that Vigil could help the next cycle, and be the voice of the protheans beyond the grave.

Over the millenia, Vigil's holographic appearance began to decay and deterioriate, leading to their final form as a bundle of incoherent static and exposed code. Vigil was forced to prioritize systems to keep itself alive, which led to a total power loss throughout the facility twelve thousand years after the prothean extinction, including backup generators. Vigil was on the verge of total memory rampancy by the time the Normandy squad arrived in 2183 CE, where it finally passed on its knowledge to them. Its mission complete, Vigil only remained active for another couple of months before the last of its power ran out, and it was finally destroyed.
