- "Sharp, lethal, unseen. When you hear the crack of a Javelin, just hope you're not the target."
- — Former turian marine.
The Type-08 Directed Energy Sniper Rifle, colloquially known as the Javelin and by specific model number as the Mark VIII Sniper Rifle, was a single-shot heat sink-based thermal clip-fed directed energy anti-materiel/anti-personnel sniper rifle manufactured by the Geth Armoury. Manufactured and entering service in 1942 CE, the Mark VIII Javelin was the dedicated sniper rifle of the geth military juggernaut, replacing the outdated Mark VI sniper rifle with an updated design and to further reflect geth advances in technology. The Mark VIII Javelin was the primary weapon of the Sniper-class geth platforms, with the weapon blending the roles of anti-materiel and anti-personnel sniper rifles into a single weapon, making it a devastating, multi-role hand-held cannon in its own right, capable of penetrating several centimeters of armor plating to get at a target beneath. The weapon fired a slug that was supercharged with molten plasma, fired through a condensed tube, and then propelled forward and accelerated to thousands of meters per second, and hitting with the force of a bomb, instantly obliterating flesh and bone, and punching through even the thickest of heavy armor worn by combatants. This firepower meant the Javelin could only fire a single slug at a time, with the user having to manually reload after every shot. The Javelin was used to devastating effect against Alliance marines during the Eden Prime War who were not prepared for the weapon's incredible accuracy and firepower, with geth snipers making short work of any marine who was foolish enough to be caught in the open. The Javelin also came equipped with a state-of-the-art recoil dampener that removed almost all recoil from the weapon, allowing any user, geth or otherwise, to peek targets with complete precision. Another advancement of the Javelin was its implementation of the geth's then-invention of the thermal clip, which removed the limitations of heat mitigation systems and allowed a geth unit to manually remove excess heat from their weapon instantly, effectively unleashing the full potential of the weapon and rendering block-fed weapons obsolete. Design-wise, the Javelin is also one of the first unique weapons in their arsenal, with the original Mark VI sniper rifle being identical to the geth pulse rifle.
The Javelin continued to see service through the Reaper War, but was finally replaced and succeeded by the Mark IX Javelin in 2200 CE.
