- "All beauty and greenery and humidity. No wonder the salarians are so weak."
- — Urdnot Wrex describing Sur'Kesh.
Sur'Kesh (Louin name that means "Tall Haven") is the second planet of the Pranas system in the Annos Basin cluster, and the homeworld of the salarian species. Being the capital of the Salarian Union, Sur'Kesh is the cradle of salarian civilization, and is held in high regard by all salarians: one of many salarian dicta is that Sur'Kesh has and will forever remain untouched by foreign occupation or attack, and this has been the driving force behind the ideology of the Union Defense Force, which has maintained an outward operational methodology of ending wars before they begin, and if this fails, keeping the war far from Sur'Kesh itself. This reverence for the planet has led to Sur'Kesh being something of an oddball in galactic society, being one of the few planets in the galaxy occupied by a powerful interstellar civilization that is hardly urbanized, containing nearly 78% rurality. As such, Sur'Kesh is considered one of the many wonders of the galaxy.
Since the conclusion of the Age of the Shattered Barons and before the Dominion Civil War, Sur'Kesh was untouched by war and violence. Even during the Reaper War, the planet remained far from the front lines, and the Union surrendered to the Galactic Dominion before enemy forces even arrived in the system during the Post-Apocalyptic War, avoiding a costly siege. In the centuries following the Dominion Civil War, Sur'Kesh would return to being a major tourist attraction, and has since returned to full salarian control.
