The Skimmer-class light freighter was a classification of freighter that was designed and built by the turian Galactic Railroads and used in the merchant fleets of hundreds of different companies across the galaxy from 2144 CE to 2215 CE. The Skimmer-class was a turian light freighter purpose built for small hauls but fast speed, outclassing the heavier freighters with its speed and maneveurability, which made it an ideal choice for small time merchant fleets who had problems with piracy and hijackings. The Skimmer-class, as was typical of turian-built ships, also came equipped with a light armament consisting of four dorsal and ventral mounted light anti-aircraft guns for warding off attacks. The Skimmer-class enjoyed minimal success, as it was largely marketed to turian merchant companies and was very rarely seen being used elsewhere in the galaxy. During the Reaper War, many Skimmer-class vessels were repurposed for use as troop transports, and in the case of the initial exchange during the final battle over Earth, as suicide ships filled to the brim with explosives that would be put under remote control and flown into defense Reaper formations to explode and do as much damage to the enemy as possible with as little casualties as possible. The turians did this again during the Post-Apocalyptic War, using whatever Skimmer-class vessels they had left to inflict enormous damage upon the Dominion fleets during the Fall of Palaven. After the war, what little Skimmer-class ships still existed were decommissioned and scrapped for materials to build newer ships.
The ship was named for the tactic of "skimming" during the War of the Sea, a tactic where turian ships would ignore their enemy's main body of ships and strike hard at the enemy flagship and/or capital ships to strike decisive blows at their main power structure, shattering the offensive capability of the rest of the fleet. These tactics weren't successful, but they did inspire later turian military tactics in their space navy, and would go on to inspire similar military tactics used by the Turian Navy for centuries afterwards.
