"The Prothean Cipher cannot be defined, it simply exists. To try and explain it would be like trying to explain color to a creature without eyes."
— Shiala R'Ness

Captain Shiala R'Ness is a former asari commando, as well as former servant of Saren Arterius and Matriarch Benezia. Born on Lesuss, Shiala was brought up hearing tales of the asari commandos and all the deeds they had committed during their existence. Deciding she wanted to be a commando, Shiala defied all expectations by deciding to basically "skip her maiden stage" and sign up for the asari army. Training hard, Shiala served in the army for thirty-five years before she was finally noticed by High Command, and offered commando training; something she gladly accepted. Two years later, she became a fully-fledged asari commando, being attached to the 23rd Commando Company under the command of Herau I'Loak. She was present on Enael when batarian forces clashed with the Citadel forces there. Shiala was later chosen as part of Benezia's bodyguard, and was indoctrinated along with her when she tried to help Saren Arterius. She was then later sacrificed to the Thorian in exchange for the cipher, but this in turn freed her from indoctrination, which allowed her to be freed by Marcus and for her to give him the cipher. She remained on Feros, electing to help the colonists recover from the geth attack.

Shiala did not survive the invasion of Feros by Reaper forces, and remained behind to give the colonists enough time to evacuate. She was then torn apart by a horde of husks.
