The Sentries of Reverence, also known as the Reverence Cult, was a Covenant order of assassins serving under the Circle of the Redeemed operating during the Terra-Rannochian War, Dominion Civil War and the Redemption Crusades. Formed in 2216 CE shortly after the Post-Apocalyptic War, the Sentries of Reverence were one of many special operations groups formed under an umbrella organization known as the Circle of the Redeemed, a Covenant intelligence agency tasked with ensuring the national security of the Covenant's borders and gathering intelligence on their enemies, such as the Galactic Dominion: the Sentries were a group within this agency that selected its assassins from a candidacy pool within the Circle and, in special cases, from especially extraordinary members of the Joint Crusader Armed Forces, to create a small group of no more than 2,500 members. This group took part in numerous wetwork operations across the galaxy, operating within their own borders and in hostile enemy space, tasked specifically with high profile assassinations and sabotage. The training process for joining the Sentries was designed to break the weak, both in strength, mental faculties and religious faith, with the goal of producing a ruthless, religiously zealous and unfeeling assassin who could execute any task expected of them, regardless of chances of success. The Sentries were heavily classified, with their exact numbers and the names of their members redacted and kept secret, making it difficult even for organizations such as the Vaos and Prometheus to retrieve any significant intelligence on the organization. The organization operated much the like Council Spectres in that recruitment into the order did not take volunteers, as even its very existence was classified and known only to the high-ranking command structure of the Circle, and select members of the Covenant's government, and the Leviathans themselves: as such, members of the group were selected, and they were not even informed what their training was for until they had passed, told only that they were being selected for work that would "benefit the Covenant and bring the Leviathans great satisfaction", as was often told to recruits. Those who passed were quickly dispersed throughout the galaxy, either in teams or alone, to operate as sleeper agents until such time as the Covenant required their services, pantomiming a normal existence either as a member in the Covenant military or as a civilian.
The scale of objectives the Sentries were used for would often vary. Within Covenant space, the Ministry of Fervor and Devotion would employ them for eliminating "heretical influences", which ranged from protest leaders to the leaders of insurrectionist groups, mostly when such jobs couldn't be handled by the Zealots of Inquisition. In enemy space, the Sentries would be tasked with assassinating other intelligence operatives, such as members of the Dominion's Prometheus or the Sanctum's Vaos, or political leaders, military brass or other persons of importance. When operations required eliminating large groups of people, such as the Palace of Eden bombings in 2252 CE when the Sentries were ordered to destroy the Spire of the New Federation in an effort to spark a war between the Dominion and the Sanctum, numerous Sentries would operate as a team in order to get the job done. In order to avoid capture, Sentries were directed to commit suicide, and if captured, look for any way to commit suicide given the tools available to them. If suicide is impossible, the isolated and compartmentalized nature of the Sentries meant it was impossible for them to give up other members or provide classified intelligence even if they wanted to. The Sentries were an elusive group, their nature one of the most secretive out of any in the rest of the Circle, presenting an intelligence nightmare that even Prometheus couldn't solve. However, despite being quite effective at crushing rebellion and maintaining theological purity within their own borders, their actions outside this proved less effective, largely due to a Covenant refusal to follow up on such actions with military action that could take advantage of the Sentries' efforts. More so, the bombings of the Palace of Eden in 2252 CE had not led to war between the Dominion and the Sanctum as was desired, and led to the capture of all but one of the six Sentries involved in the operation, who would later commit suicide anyway when they realized their later capture was inevitable. While feared by Prometheus and Vaos, and proving extremely effective at maintaining the Covenant's reach and power, their success was still limited. Regardless, they continued to see use throughout the Terra-Rannochian War, and even the Dominion Civil War as it raged.
Following the Dominion Civil War and the collapse of the Covenant, the remaining Sentries scattered throughout the galaxy were left without orders and a greater objective. Most would join the many Covenant remnant groups that formed post-war, engaging in a series of conflicts with the nascent UGR in what they called the "Redemption Crusades", only to be killed or captured as they were slowly picked off by the UGR's forces, leading to the final Covenant remnant faction's defeat in 2279 CE. Despite this, many Sentries did not join the remnant factions during the war, and while their group no longer operated after the defeat of the final remnant faction, considered officially defunct, those that remained faded into obscurity, believed to have committed suicide, successfully reintegrated into society and adopted new identities, or were still waiting for orders that would never come, having cut themselves off from the galaxy and were unaware of the Covenant's destruction. Regardless of what may be, the Sentries of Reverence ceased to operate as an organization after 2279 CE and the end of the Redemption Crusades.
