"They stood alone, without allies, struggling to survive against a tidal wave of enemies from all sides. I'm surprised they lasted as long as they did."
— Turian political historian regarding the short-lived Hekrast republic.

The Quarian Republic of Hekrast, also known as the Hekrast Republic and to its citizens as simply the Quarian Republic, was a rump state of the Greater Republic of Rannoch and its Colonies that survived the collapse of its parent state at the end of the First Morning War for a period of three years from 1896 CE to 1899 CE. During the First Morning War, Hekrast was one of the quarian colonies that was able to resist much of the initial wave of geth rebellion, but unlike the other colonies, was eventually able to defeat it, successfully exterminating the geth population on the planet. Despite this, Hekrast was right on the edge of quarian space, far from the core of the Greater Republic, and thus it was a low priority for the quarian military during the war as it tried to snuff out the geth rebellions cropping out all over its territory, especially on the homeworld of Rannoch. As the war dragged on, the geth continued to gain the initiative, and news from Rannoch was bleak, with quarian forces being decimated on all fronts and civilian casualties numbering in the billions. Hekrast was left isolated, having crushed the geth rebels on the planet but too isolated to be of any help in the larger conflict, and the geth never sent any forces to take Hekrast: looking to save itself, it cut itself off from the rest of the galaxy, hoping the geth would ignore it, and they did. When the First Morning War ended and millions of quarians departed with the exodus fleet into the beginning of their 300 year exile, Hekrast was the only quarian colony to survive intact, effectively becoming a rump state of the now extinct Greater Republic.

On its own, the Hekrast colony branded itself the "Quarian Republic" and began to self-govern, declaring itself the successor to the Greater Republic and the only legitimate quarian government. An invitation was extended to the exodus fleet to settle on Hekrast, but the Citadel Council put its foot down and threatened to deploy a fleet to chase off the exodus fleet if they set foot on Hekrast, and so the invitation was rejected. Not long after the war ended, the Batarian Hegemony saw an opportunity to humiliate the quarians and launched a protracted and vicious campaign against the planet. The Sacks of Hekrast, as they became known, were a series of ruthless and merciless attacks by the Hegemony Army, supported by the Hegemony Navy, upon the Hekrast colony, with the capital and its numerous peripheral settlements being sacked repeatedly, with hundreds of quarian civilians being murdered, raped or captured. The aim was to break the spirit of the quarian colonists, chasing them off the planet and dealing the final death blow to quarian civilization, but the Hekrast colony remarkably held out, and in the fourth of the sackings, the quarian colonists, having trained themselves to defend their planet, mounted a bloody defense of the capital, killing dozens of batarian soldiers and finally repelling them, dealing the Hegemony its first defeat. Despite this, the victory had come at a cost, and the colony's numbers were dwindling by the day. Unable to trade with the Council or Terminus Systems due to trade embargos and sanctions against it, and slowly being ground down by the constant attacks from the Hegemony, the Hekrast colony was on its deathbed. Finally, in 1899 CE, the Hegemony launched the eighth of its raids, which proved to be the last. Having packed up and evacuated its civilians offworld, the remainder of Hekrast's small militia force fought to the death against the Hegemony Army, eventually being overwhelmed and killed, with only a couple quarians captured, who later committed suicide by bashing their heads against a wall on the way back to Khar'Shan. The batarians razed the abandoned quarian settlements, stripped of all valuables and technology, and abandoned the planet. The evacuated civilians later joined up with the exodus fleet, now at this point called the Migrant Fleet.
