"Do you even...know what loss feels like? I do. I sent an entire company to their deaths. All I could think about was how much I could make the Alliance proud by grabbing a quick victory. Destroy the fort, they said. You have the men, they said. So I did. I ordered the charge, and they carried out their own slaughter. When I learnt that Shepard was the last man standing, and to have him look me in the eyes and say "there is no 17th STC", all I could do was run. From myself, and from the Alliance."
— Major Kyle

Major Norman Kyle is a former marine in the Systems Alliance Marine Corps and currently a retired major being treated for PTSD by the VAO. Born on Watson, Kyle was born into a military family, and was pressured into joining the military when he came of age. Because of this, mixed with a personality that ensured he was always needing to one up other people, he slowly rose in the ranks, but his teamwork and leadership skills left much to be desired, and only occurred because his father and mother had substantial pull in parliament. Several years later, Major Kyle was given command of the 17th Shock Troops Company, and was placed at the vanguard of the assault on Torfan. Wanting a quick victory and an easy promotion, he ordered his men to charge, instead of waiting for Battlegroup Black to get into position, as was tactically recommended. Because of his incompetence, his entire company was slaughtered, and he was dishonorably discharged. Suffering from PTSD, he set up a miniture biotic cult on Presrop, which quickly grew in size. Eventually the cult was dissolved and Kyle handed himself in, where he was treated for PTSD.

Kyle was on Earth when the Reapers hit. He proceeded to join the worldwide resistance, helping combat Reaper operations throughout South America. He was killed during the Battle of Trujilo, which marked the end of the South American campaign of the Occupation of Earth, as well as the last major offensive prior to Operation: Stormwind.
