"Four targets on the third floor, six on the second. I give the third floor about a second before I've downed them, second is yours."
— Melenis Gaition to Garrus Vakarian during the Zeta raids.

Sergeant Melenis Gaition was a former sharpshooter in the STG, a freelancer working in the Terminus Systems and a member of Archangel's Omega Squad. Born on Jaeto, Melenis attended the University of Talat to study military history and social science, where he graduated magna cum laude and ended up joining the Special Tasks Group. Upon completion of his training, he was assigned to the 8th Infiltration Regiment where he would participate in several intelligence and black operations, including operations Breakpoint, Whiplash, Wings, Copper and Kingmaker. By the time of Operation Wings, Melenis' sharpshooting skills were noticed and following Kingmaker, he was officially assigned to a sniper unit within the 8th INFILREG, where he'd further participate in Operation Fortune and Operation Indigo. Melenis retired from the STG in 2179 CE, but quickly took up work as a mercenary, hiring out his skill as a sniper for contracts as a hitman and for operations of a discreet nature. Melenis was responsible for numerous assassinations and corporate sabotage all over the Terminus Systems over this four year period, with some reports by the STG suggesting he also took contracts within Citadel space and the Attican Traverse: Melenis even accepted a contract directly from the elcor government to locate and eliminate one of their own political officials who was suspected of being involved in a child-trafficking ring but who couldn't be charged due to running his operations in the Terminus Systems. This wouldn't be the last contract he accepted from a government, as he would also accept a mission from the Republic of Illium to hunt down and kill an asari serial killer who had escaped offworld, a mission he completed.

In late 2183 CE, Melenis was hired by the Chinese Triads to eliminate a vigilante going by the name of Archangel. Melenis accepted the contract but was soon after confronted by his target in his apartment, with Garrus instead making a plea to Melenis to join his team instead: Melenis took some convincing, although he quickly came around once Archangel explained why the Triads wanted him dead, namely for disrupting their sex trafficking ring and drug-running operations on Omega: convinced, Melenis then joined Garrus on a mission to raid the storehouse where the Triads kept their slaves, freeing them and killing a dozen Triads in the process. From that point forward, Melenis became a member of the team, and while Garrus suspected he was former STG based on his skill set, he didn't pry and was just glad to have an expert sharpshooter such as Melenis on his squad. Combined with Garrus' similar skill, ambushes proved devastating, with Melenis' STG training allowing him to move quickly from one location to another, taking down hostile targets with precise efficiency. Melenis proved a difficult member of the team personality wise, remaining isolated from the rest of them and not a particularly social individual, preferring to remain focused on his profession and nothing else: when the team became divided on whether to continue their war against crime on Omega or cash their chips and quit while they could, Melenis supported the former. Melenis was ultimately the one to suggest targeting the leadership of the three major PMCs on the station, and was the architect of the missions to ambush Weyrloc Garm in the Sino District and assassinate Krefin Tarak at his home. Melenis would participate in both operations, providing invaluable support and helping the team get out of numerous sticky situations through his quick thinking and incredible precision.

In July 2185 CE, Melenis Gaition was in the team's headquarters of the Suri-Kara Hotel with the rest of the team (except for Garrus and Sidonis, the former of which was investigating a lead and the latter doing a supply run) running checks on his equipment and planning out an ambush to eliminate Gaehok Jaroth when the Blue Suns and Blood Pack launched a surprise raid on their base, having captured and tortured Sidonis into giving up his team and leading Garrus away on a false lead as bait. Being upstairs in their briefing room when the attack began, he survived the initial bombardment that killed several members outright, and quickly grabbed his sniper rifle and got to work, hoping to cover his team's retreat. Melenis killed several Blood Pack and Blue Suns mercs before they breached a door on his level, attacking from behind. Melenis was in the process of turning to deal with this new threat when Jentha Renmark, using a tactical cloak, snuck up behind him. Melenis sensed this at the last minute, wacking her with the butt of his rifle, but was too slow to deal with the Blood Pack merc coming up from the rear, and his right arm was blown off from a shotgun blast. Dropping his rifle and now one-armed, Melenis slashed at Jentha with a combat knife and leapt off the balcony onto the lower level to escape his attackers. Melenis was able to find cover from the attack and contacted Garrus, warning him of the attack, only to learn Garrus already knew and was on his way: he then tried to contact Sidonis, but received no answer. Melenis was subsequently found by Renmark, who put a bullet through Melenis' head before he could respond, killing him. Upon returning to the hideout to find his dead squad, Garrus gathered Melenis' body along with the rest into body bags, lining them up in their living quarters to keep them outside the carnage of the Kima Siege. Garrus was unable to recover Melenis' body after he was extracted by the Normandy Squad, but later scratched Melenis' name, along with the names of the rest of his squad, into his eyepiece in an effort to remember them.
