The Maginot Line, also known as the Athena Defensive Line, was an interstellar line of fortifications, defense platforms, stationary fleet formations, surface-based fortresses and anti-aerospace weapon installations built by the Galactic Dominion to deter invasion by the Titan Covenant, protect the Dominion's northwest border against exterior threats, and to help facilitate anti-Covenant expeditionary operations. The Maginot Line (named after the French interwar fortification of the same name) was built post-Thessian Fallout in precipitation for an invasion of the Covenant. After the end of the Post-Apocalyptic War and the armistice between the Covenant and the Dominion was signed, Awarnach Stanford convinced the Dominion senate to finish construction of the Maginot Line, ultimately setting the stage for Operation Silent Zealot.

By 2230 CE, the Maginot Line was completed and went into full operation: it was headquartered at Orbit and the naval forces attached to it were known as the Maginot Armada, or "Combined Fleet of the Maginot Line". While Covenant forces continued to find holes within the Line and break through into Dominion space, the number of incursions and the amount was greatly reduced, with many assaults halted dead in their tracks. The Maginot Line remained fully manned until the Dominion Civil War in 2253 CE, when much of the Line was demobilized to help fight on the numerous fronts the DDF had set up. Due to its vulnerable state, the Covenant attacked the Line in a series of engagements, only for it to be reinforced by pro-DDF Confederate forces, resulting in the first and only time in the civil war that Dominion loyalist and DDF forces fought side-by-side. The action proved moot in the end when the Ark joined the battle, which made short work of the disorganized Covenant survivors and smashed through the center of the Maginot Line.

Following the civil war, the remaining Maginot Line fortifications were dismantled or reallocated.
