- "The Mako was literally showcased as the ultimate 'drop from orbit' weapon. Falling from the atmosphere, landing in the middle of an enemy formation, and chewing 'em up before they even knew the Alliance was comin'? Beauty."
- — James Vega describing the M35.
The M35 All-Terrain Light Recon and Assault Vehicle (M35 AT-LRAV), colloquially named as the Mako, was a class of light tank that doubled as an infantry fighting vehicle that was employed by the Systems Alliance. Designed and built by Leonidas Defense Systems, the M35 Mako was one of two approved replacements for the M28 Angel, which had severely underperformed in the First Contact War due to a series of fatal flaws in its design. The M35 Mako completely overhauled how the Alliance viewed the IFV, bringing revolutionary new design philosophies to almost every aspect of its functionality and utility. Possessing a multi-role main gun that could switch between anti-armor and anti-personnel ammunition modes on the fly, vertical thrusters for use in navigating difficult terrain and to allow it to be dropped from suborbital altitudes, flexible suspension to allow it to climb extremely steep angles, and a powerful engine for reaching high speeds, the M35 Mako was everything the Alliance wanted from an IFV and more. Advanced for its time and admired for its tactical usage of orbital deployment, the vehicle first saw deployment during the Skyllian Blitz, where it became the standard fighting vehicle for all Alliance armoured units. The vehicle saw extensive use during the Reaper War and the Border War as well, where its incredibly flexible application in combat made it the most successful of any Alliance land vehicle, elevating it to become the most famous of the entire Alliance arsenal. After the Eden Prime War, where the Normandy Squad made extensive use of an M35 Mako during their campaign against Saren's Alliance, every single Normandy-class stealth frigate was outfitted with at least one M35 Mako, and entire armoured battalions were formed consisting of just M35 Makos: prior to the Reaper War, Cerberus was able to construct 450 of their own M35 Makos, but most were either destroyed by war's end or later captured and integrated into the Alliance's own fleet. At some point, an exploration variant, the ND1, was produced for the Andromeda Initiative.
Despite its enormous success, flaws in the design and its growing obsolesce was beginning to show after the Border War, where a successor was already in the works. The M35B Mako was built to replace the original M35, and by the time of the Post-Apocalyptic War, M35Bs were already being actively deployed alongside the aging M35s, where they greatly outperformed their predecessors. Fixing problems of "poor handling" due to "floaty controls", and further improving upon its design by adding energy shields, an even more powerful engine, a miniaturized gauss cannon and rocket pods, the addition of chaff launchers, a widened passenger bay for greater troop loads and Silaris armor, the M35B quickly became the new favourite, and after the PA war, the remaining M35 fleet was retired and deactivated, many of them mothballed while others were sold for scrap or for use in PMCs and corporations. Many M35s were captured and brought out of retirement during the Dominion Civil War by both loyalists and separatists, but were mostly overshadowed by the M35B and suffered heavy casualties. After the war, these remaining M35s were finally retired entirely, with the remainder scrapped.
The M35 Mako was named for the mako shark on Earth, as per the Alliance's naming convention for tanks and other armoured land vehicles.
