The Lincoln-class escort carrier was a classification of carrier that served in the Systems Alliance Navy from 2165 CE to 2191 CE, then the Systems Coalition Navy from 2191 CE to 2194 CE, and was the successor to the Columbus-class. Carriers are the leading symbol of Alliance military innovation, as carriers were the Alliance's primary advantage over the turians in the First Contact War, as well as the pariah to their dreadnoughts. The Lincoln-class improved upon the Columbus-class in almost every area: the Lincoln-class could be built en masse at cheaper cost, as well as be more mobile, although at the sacrifice of armor and fighter compliment. The Lincoln-class also possessed more drones, allowing it to swarm an enemy task force or fleet, learn its capabilities and tactical disposition, and then report back to the allied fleet, a tactic Irix Coronati would later use in Operation Uppercut in 2186 CE with his own fleet.
The Lincoln-class' cost effective production rating made it a boon for the Systems Alliance during the Reaper War, as it was capable of replenishing and replacing the escort carriers they lost with newer ones. More drones were added as a result, allowing it to accompany the larger force of Reaper Oculi. This allowed escort carriers to play a vital role in the conflict, with large carrier task groups being capable of swarming a Reaper force, learning their placement on the field and weapons capabilities, and giving their allied fleet the time to adapt to these circumstances. By the end of the war, the Alliance was able to replenish its carrier fleets up much faster by mass producing the Lincoln-class, which gave the Coalition an edge over the batarians during the Border War, who lacked sufficient carriers of their own. Eventually, the Coalition phased out the Lincoln-class with the superior Ariel Sharon-class, and did away with escort carriers altogether.
The class was named after Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States of America from 1861 CE to 1865 CE who was famously known for the Emancipation Proclomation and as the wartime leader of the US during the First American Civil War. He was also one of only four US presidents who were assassinated.
