The Kugalth-class battlecruiser was a classification of cruiser that served in the Hegemony Navy from 2047 CE to 2198 CE, and was the successor to the Ka'hairal-class. A habit of the batarian hegemony is often to allow its vessels to continue serving even if they're obsolete to save on costs, which was the case of the Kugalth-class, the class which was already rendered obsolete by the turian Trifecta-class heavy cruiser. Whilst the class possessed a considerable arsenal of weaponry, its armor was easily penetrated by GARDIAN batteries, and its effectiveness against heavy cruisers was nill when mobility on most heavy cruisers was far superior to battlecruisers. Also, by 2047 CE, every major Council military had phased battlecruisers out of service due to this lack of mobility. Despite this, the Kugalth-class was quickly utilized as a symbol of the Hegemony Navy's might, with the government often deploying them to pacify rebellious Hegemony colonies or revolting slave worlds, and thus became the staple of the batarian navy, and the most numerous capital ship in their fleets. Most of them were destroyed during the Reaper War, but the batarians were able to build up a significant portion of them before the Border War broke out. After the war, and as per the Treaty of Elysium, the new batarian navy was significantly downsized, with the Systems Coalition forcibly decommissioning the Kugalth-class, restricting the new defense fleet to ships no more higher in weight than frigates. The Kugalth-class continued to serve in the Holy Covenant Navy after the end of the Border War, but was eventually replaced by the newer Ocrolya-class heavy cruiser.
The ship is named after the Battle of Kugalth, a battle of dubious historical authenticity that is detailed in the Epic of Kugalth and Braknor, an extremely popular batarian epic dating back to the 30th Century BCE.
