- — Kelly Chambers.
Yeoman Kelly Chambers, also known by her alias Hazel Barber, was a psychologist and former member of Cerberus, later a volunteer in the Systems Alliance Navy, and the yeoman for the Normandy SR-2. Born on Trident, Kelly possessed a keen mind and intellect, finding her fascination with aliens early on and wanting a career that would allow her to explore new alien cultures while also pursuing what she believed to be preserving humanity's place amongst the stars. Studying psychology at University of Ohio on Earth, Kelly graduated with majors in social and cognitive psychology in 2180 CE at the age of 21, where she had planned to set up a practice on the Citadel, only to be approached by Cerberus and recruited into their organization, wanting to recruit someone of her talents. Kelly was initially hesitant due to the organization's history of radical pro-humanist policies, but accepted her place in the organization as she gradually began to see it as a force for good, realizing the organization's principles were more about protecting humanity's interests rather than born from a place of xenophobia, and thus she became deeply embedded in Cerberus' ideals. With her degree in psychology, Kelly was able to study numerous different alien species to see how they reacted emotionally and socially, and she quickly became one of the organization's leading experts in that field. This, combined with her jovial, approachable and friendly demeanor made her a prime candidate when picking members to join the crew of the SSV Normandy SR-2 in 2184 CE, with Kelly assigned in an official role as the ship's yeoman, but unofficially was the ship's counselor, assigned to evaluate and manage the mental and social well being of the crew for the duration of their mission. Secretly however, Kelly, along with much of the crew that were also chosen to serve beside her, were selected as per the criteria established by Cerberus' study of Commander Shepard's previous crew on the SR-1, wanting to create an environment of familiarity for the commander in order to make it easier to manipulate and control him, an action that would, ironically, backfire on them following the Collector campaign's conclusion when the crew ultimately went rogue and joined Shepard.
Regardless, Kelly was proud to serve aboard the Normandy, excited by the prospect of actively serving beside humanity's greatest military hero, as well as his alien squad mates and crew members. While Kelly's association with Cerberus led to distrust between her and Shepard's past affiliates, she was the one they came to trust the fastest, as her welcoming demeanor and sincerity made her approachable and easy to talk with, and it wasn't long before many of the alien crew came to trust her with their issues, allowing Kelly to be a conduit for information to her commanding officer in regards to the mental health of his crew. In late 2185 CE, towards the end of the Collector campaign, the Normandy would be attacked and disabled by a Collector cruiser, with the entire crew, including Kelly, being abducted and taken back to the Collector Base in pods to be melted down and used to build the Human-Reaper. While Kelly and the rest of the crew would survive the traumatic experience and be rescued by the Normandy Squad, Kelly was deeply shaken and mentally shattered by the incident, suffering frequent waking nightmares and hallucinations regarding her experience in her pod. Kelly would ultimately side with Shepard and defect from Cerberus, but in the leadup to the Bahak Incident her mental state continued to deteriorate to the point where she could no longer properly conduct her job. Kelly, like much of the crew, would leave the Normandy prior to the ship being handed over to the Systems Alliance following the Bahak incident, in order to avoid being arrested for their prior Cerberus affiliation. Kelly would abandon her hopes of setting up a practice on the Citadel but would still live on the station, and spent the next six months going to therapy, where she would start to improve, her nightmares becoming far less frequent and able to start a small job as an office clerk. Due to Cerberus actively searching for her and other members of the crew, Kelly was forced to die her hair blonde and change her name to Hazel Barber, an alias which she kept for her entire stay on the Citadel. When the Reaper War broke out in 2186 CE, Kelly volunteered at the refugee camp at Docking Bay D24, helping provide food and water to the refugees and, unofficially, providing a place for many to vent their emotional stress through discussion.
A week into the war, she was found by Shepard, who tried to recruit her back onto the Normandy: Kelly initially turned him down, not willing to set foot on the frigate ever again due to her experiences, but the later Cerberus assault on the station convinced her to reconsider, as her identity had only just managed to save her from being recognized and executed, and so she accepted Shepard's offer, changing her identity back to Kelly Chambers and allowing her hair to return to its natural red color. Kelly resumed her original post as yeoman, but not as a psychologist, as she didn't trust herself to be mentally fit enough to handle people's mental issues: however, as the war continued, she slowly slipped back into this role, largely due to the friendships she had developed with previous members of the crew who still looked to her for guidance. During her time on the Normandy, she would enter a romantic relationship with communications specialist Samantha Traynor, although Kelly initially rebuked it as unprofessional, as such a relationship had been nurtured and developed during their sessions. During the opening stages of the Deliverance's attack on the Normandy towards the end of the war, Kelly would be present with Samantha and pilot Jeff Moreau in the cockpit, with Kelly departing for the AI core in an effort to reactivate EDI so she could save the ship. Whilst in the medical bay with Doctors Chakwas and Michel, Kai Leng broke in and attacked them: whilst they were running for the AI core, Kai Leng managed to impale Michel through the back, killing her. Kelly punched Leng, but as he reeled from the blow, he defensively brought his sword up with him, the action managing to slice Kelly along her jugular vein, slicing her throat open. While EDI was able to stop Leng from finishing off Kelly, the injury in her throat was significant, and she chokes on her own blood, dying only minutes later. Kelly's death, along with those of the rest of the crew murdered by Cerberus during the attack, would be avenged in the Normandy's subsequent reprisal on the Deliverance only a day later.
