- "May you stand between your crew and harm as you lead them through the empty quarters of the stars."
- — Kar'Danna reciting a ship captain's blessing to Commander Shepard during Tali's trial in September 2185 CE.
Captain Kar'Danna vas Rayya (formerly known as Kar'Danna nar Tonbay), also known by his nickname Patriarch of the Rayya, was the former captain of the QMFV Rayya and a former Migrant Fleet marine that served in the 71st Marine Expeditionary Force. Born on the QMFV Tonbay, Kar'Danna was an extremely patriotic quarian, wanting to dedicate his life to the defense and protection of the Fleet, and hoping to one day captain a ship and lead them to victory over the geth as his people finally reclaimed their lost homeworld: this was a driving force for Kar early in his life, and by the time he was 15, he had determined he wished to join the marines. Despite this, he would not engage in the military pre-pilgrimage training program, deciding to complete his pilgrimage and join the marines shortly after. As such, Kar set out on his pilgrimage in 2136 CE, returning a year later with crates of weapons he had procured with credits earned during his time as a mercenary in the Winged Chevaliers, allowing him to join the crew of the Rayya. Shortly after completing his pilgrimage, he would join the marines, and upon completion of his training, would be assigned to the 10th Force Recon Battalion of the 71st Marine Expeditionary Force. During his time in the marines, he would partake in several missions under Operation First Strike, winning numerous commendations for bravery and injuries sustained in battle. In 2159 CE, he would be nominated as a candidate for the captaincy of the Rayya, and shortly thereafter was victorious, becoming the Rayya's new captain, at which point he retired from the marines. During his time as captain, Kar was seen as a kind and caring commander, taking the time to know the names of his crew and familiarize himself with their families, which was seen as a particularly impressive achievement given he commanded a liveship, one of the three largest and most populated vessels in the entire Migrant Fleet. Kar would earn the epithet of "Patriarch of the Rayya" as a result, seen as a father figure by much of the crew and one who would willingly give his life to protect any of them. In time, he would become one of the most well respected captains in the Fleet, known for his selfless dedication to his people and willingness to do anything to ensure his ship was safe, running weekly inspections of his vessel that he conducted personally.
In 2145 CE, Kar would marry the chief engineer of the Rayya, Nona'Donna, and in that same year would have a son, Qet'Danna, and Nona would remain as chief enginner when Kar took command of the Rayya. Kar took it as a personal honor when Admiral Meru'Zorah chose the Rayya as her flagship and that of the Patrol Fleet, becoming quite familiar with Clan Zorah and became something of a uncle figure in Tali'Zorah's life as she was growing up. Kar was one of hundreds of quarians on the Rayya afflicted by a virus outbreak in 2168 CE, and while he would survive, many wouldn't, among them Admiral Meru'Zorah herself (although it was later revealed she had faked her death). With Rael'Zorah becoming more and more absent in Tali's life, her aunt Shala'Raan (and Meru's successor as admiral) and Kar'Danna would take a more active role in her life as guiding figures: Kar'Danna was extremely proud of Tali following the triumphant completion of her pilgrimage after the Eden Prime War in 2183 CE. In September 2185 CE, the Rayya was selected by the Admiralty Board to host the trial for Tali'Zorah, who was accused of treason relating to the then-unfolding Alarei Incident. Taking personal offense to the charge of treason, Kar'Danna was vocal about his support for Tali, refusing to believe she was guilty of such charges, but had to recuse himself due to his personal history with her. Regardless, when Kar'Danna was ordered to place Tali'Zorah under arrest upon her arrival, he exercised his authority as captain to simply place her under shipboard arrest, allowing her freedom of movement throughout the ship during her stay: upon completion of the trial, Kar'Danna was pleased with the results. In late October of the same year, Kar'Danna would willingly play host to the crew of the Normandy SR-2 as they were on the run from Cerberus. Only a few days later however, Cerberus forces in league with the Shadow Broker would infiltrate the Fleet using a disguised light cruiser and dock with the Rayya, launching an assault on the ship with the goal of killing the Normandy Squad and reclaiming the Normandy. Kar would personally lead the ship's marine security detachment to push back the assault, but was severely injured during a firefight and had to be dragged to safety. Unfortunately Kar'Danna would later succumb to his wounds, having been hit with polonium-tipped bullets, dying six hours later. He would later be succeeded by his son, Qet'Danna, as captain of the Rayya.
