- "You go, kid. Be free, be whole, and live well. I know I did."
- — Hendel on Illium during its fall to Gillian Grayson shortly after tricking her onto an evacuation shuttle while he remained behind to help civilians evacuate in 2186 CE.
Hendel Mitra (known to the quarians of the Idenna as Hendel'Mitra vas Idenna) was the former security chief of JGAS and the Ascension program, an honorary member of the quarian ship QMFV Idenna and part of its security force, and the self-appointed guardian of Gillian Grayson. Born on Earth and growing up in the New Kolkata megapolis in the United Republics of Asian Nations, Hendel's father was an Indian while his mother was Swedish, with his first name influenced by the latter. In 2150 CE, Hendel's mother was exposed to element zero following the crash of a truck that spread the dust-form version of the substance across the eastern parts of the city, and this led to Hendel eventually developing biotic abilities when he grew into adolescence. When he was 17 and his powers first manifested, officials from Conatix Industries approached Hendel's family to induct him into the Biotic Acclimation and Temperance Training program on Jump Zero, but shortly after his parents shipped him off to Jump Zero, Hendel ran afoul of Conatix's manipulation, who engaged in a policy of deliberately trying to separate the children from their families, which included trying to make them fear their children's abilities, which ultimately worked too well for Hendel's parents, as they ceased contact with him and became estranged. Even when BAaT was shutdown and Conatix folded, Hendel didn't return to his family, resenting them for abandoning him and refusing any contact with them as he decided to make full use of his abilities. With nowhere else to go, he enlisted in the Alliance marines, where he served for five years. Upon hearing of Jon Grissom Academy's Ascension program, and how it treated their biotic students more humanely rather than lab animals and military property, Hendel quit the marines in 2172 CE and enlisted as a security guard at the Academy, eventually rising to become chief of security by 2175 CE. During his time there he became friends with Alliance lieutenant Kahlee Sanders who worked at the station, and became a role member for autistic student Gillian Grayson, believing Hendel's past with BAaT and gruff, but loyal demeanour would make him an excellent choice to act as a guiding force for the younger Gillian. During this time, Hendel becomes more and more protective of Ascension's students overall, and becomes something of a father towards them over the course of his time spent there.
In 2184 CE, Hendel saves Gillian's life when he undercovers a Cerberus operative named Jiro Toshiwa, disguised as one of the doctors working at the Academy, trying to incapacitate her with a cerebrospinal medication so he could abduct her, capturing Jiro and performing CPR on Gillian until she could EMTs could help her. Realizing Cerberus wanted Gillian, Hendel agreed to plan with Kahlee and Gillian's father, Paul Grayson, to spirit her away to Omega: Hendel realizes his suspicion of Paul was correct, as he himself is a Cerberus operative, and helps Pel Ladges, a Cerberus commando, capture them upon arriving at the station. Betraying the Illusive Man, Pel planned to sell them to the Collectors, but they were wsaved by a quarian pilgrim named Lemm'Shal and, with his help, they flee to the Migrant Fleet to seek refuge on the Idenna, where they believed they were safe: whilst undergoing decontamination procedures, Hendel taught Gillian how to hone her powers, and as time went on, Gillian saw Hendel more and more like a father figure, far more than her actual father, who wanted to abduct her for experiments and was a red sand addict. When the Idenna is boarded by Pel, his commandos, Paul Grayson and quarian traitor and exile Golo'Mekk, Hendel provides biotic support for the quarian marines defending the ship, and manages to kill a few commandos trying to get Gillian, but he becomes separated during the attack: fortunately, Gillian was saved by Paul Grayson, who had a change of heart and killed Golo'Mekk, turning on his employer. After Kahlee returns to the Alliance to hand over Paul to the authorities, Hendel chooses to remain with Gillian on the Idenna, joining their crew where he becomes part of its security force, earning the honorary title of "vas Idenna" for his service. He'd serve in this role for another year before departing with Gillian on the Glory of Khar'Shan after defeating its crew in an attempted slaver raid, Gillian learning of her father's death and wanting vengeance. Hendel would ultimately convince her against this endeavour, as they didn't have the resources or qualifications to take on Cerberus, and the two were planning to return to the Idenna when the Reaper invasion began. With no word from the Idenna, Hendel took Gillian to Illium, where they were present when Reaper forces began their siege of the planet. Tricking Gillian to get on an evacuation shuttle by saying he wasn't far behind, Hendel contacted her after take off to say he wasn't coming, remaining behind to help evacuate civilians as long as possible. Despite a tearful goodbye, Hendel admitted he had taught Gillian all she needed to know to survive in life, and didn't need him to look after her anymore. Hendel Mitra would die when the evac zones were overrun with Reaper forces, helping the evacuation to the very last minute and refusing to evacuate himself when prompted to do so.
