"Many clans, one family."
— Motto of the Greater Quarian Republic.

The Greater Republic of Rannoch and its Colonies, simply known as the Greater Quarian Republic or the Quarian Republic, also known as the First Quarian Republic and Old Quarian Republic, and sometimes as the First Rannochian Republic, was the representative body of Rannoch, its nations and quarian colonies from 79 CE to 1896 CE. Prior to the creation of the Greater Republic, Rannoch had been at peace for four decades, with the last major war having ended in 36 CE, allowing for forty years of unprecedented peace to flow over the planet. In this time, enormous technological leaps were made, with the Annigeh Triple Alliance, the most powerful nation on the planet at the time, leading the way in space travel research, with the main goal to land quarians on one of the many worlds in the Tikkun system being shared by most of the quarian nations on the planet, so much so that they all signed the Treaty of Shoh to this degree, where every nation would work together to make their dream a reality. In 77 CE, this dream finally became reality when the ATA launched the first quarian manned mission to Kaddi, discovering in the process a prothean observation facility. The discovery of life in the galaxy outside of their own shook the quarian world, and the decision was made by the Annigeh Triple Alliance to call a meeting between them and the other six quarian nations of the planet to discuss the ramifications of this: meeting in the ancient city of Vesah'una'stali, they eventually reached an agreement to establish a supranational government to oversee their colonization of the stars, and in 79 CE, the Greater Republic of Rannoch was created, unifying all of Rannoch under a single banner. The individual nations retained their autonomy, but the Greater Republic would represent quarian interests on the galactic stage, projecting a united front for the entire species.

Late that same year, a passing patrol of the Tuchankan Empire entered the Tikkun system and came across quarian explorers, establishing first contact. Shortly thereafter, the Greater Republic joined the galactic community, establishing an embassy on the Citadel and with the help of the Citadel Council, the Republic was quickly able to expand beyond its home system, establishing colonies on dozens of worlds. Despite being new, the Greater Republic quickly established itself on the galactic scene, the technological prowess of the quarians allowing itself to gain a steady lead on its neighbours, even when compared to the Salarian Union. Even with the Renegade Crisis continuing to escalate, and the Republic being largely cut off from its Council allies, the Greater Republic remained strong, even managing to defeat the krogan in a small, undeclared border conflict. The Greater Republic suffered heavy losses during the Krogan Rebellions but managed to survive, and with the collapse of the Tuchankan Empire, the Republic was left with even more breathing room to expand, so it did, even in spite of the Terminus Revolutions. By 1000 CE, the Greater Republic was considered powerful enough to join the Citadel Council as its fourth member, its collective economic and military might allowing it to provide ships to the Citadel Defense Fleet and become a partner of the Council races. The Greater Republic's ability to defend itself was demonstrated in its victory after the Quarian-Batarian War, checking the aggressive expansion of the Batarian People's Republic and single-handedly defeating it militarily. The Greater Republic even entered a tech race with the Salarian Union in which it was winning, with many technological innovations, including the omni-tool, being invented by the Republic's greatest scientific minds. The government of the Republic was democratic, with all of the clans of Rannoch and its colonies being represented within the senate, and the head of state holding the title of Prime Candidate of Rannoch. Quarians were a social people, so talking and debating was a natural framework of their culture, making quarian politics arduous and draining. Legislation was discussed for months before being passed, and every single aspect of their society was given a voice. In times of war, the quarian military would override such processes to give it the ability to react more quickly, but in times of peace, decisions were reached only after a slow, methodical process of debate and discussion. As such, the cogs of the political machine of the Greater Republic turned torturously slow, but as a result, any political action taken by the Republic was made by all quarians. Even declarations of war required methodical and careful discussion, only made prematurely where decisive action was needed.

The beginning of the end of the Greater Republic began just under a century and a half prior with the invention of the first geth in 1744 CE. The geth, meaning "Servants of the People" in Khelish, would revolutionize the galactic robotics industry, with billions going on to be built within their lifespan, being used to make the average quarian's quality of life simpler and easier. Built by Fera-Manganus, the Greater Republic's primary resource for its technological superiority, the geth changed quarian society forever, although it was not realized at the time. As the geth continued to be refined and improved on, their collective intelligence increased, with the quarians unknowingly bordering on creating artificial intelligence as their improvements to the geth only made them smarter and more aware of their surroundings. One day, in 1891 CE, a geth unit asked its owner if it had a soul, sparking a panic that shook the entire Greater Republic to its core, proving the geth had achieved self-awareness and therefore fit the classification of an AI: by 1893 CE, the issue was confirmed. Desperate to quell a potential geth uprising and for the Council to not find out, the Greater Republic attempted to have every single geth rounded up and permanently shut down, but the order only provoked the geth to violence as they fought for their right to live. In late 1894 CE, the Morning Crisis exploded into full-scale rebellion by the geth, and within a year, the Greater Republic was utterly destroyed. After a final stand at Rannoch, the quarians fled in a gigantic exodus fleet, scattered to the stars as their Republic collapsed, becoming galactic pariahs and the geth were victorious. With the quarian homeworld and its home territories falling into geth hands, and the quarians left with no more territory to call their own, the Greater Republic was finished, and the exodus fleet would continue to wander around the galaxy for the next 300 years. The quarians would eventually reclaim Rannoch and establish a reconciliation with the geth that would birth a republic even more powerful than the first, but the glory of the Greater Republic was one coveted by the quarians ever since, a goal they would never again attain.
