Dranek is a star system in the Althak Vepar cluster. In the prothean cycle, the Dranek system was used by the Prothean Empire a hundred or so years into the their war with the Reapers to build a superweapon they believed could destroy the Reapers, with Sazgoth used as a planned construction site, but the plan fell through as supply chains collapsed and the war deteriorated. Fifty thousand years later, the Dranek system would be colonized in 42 CE along with the rest of the Althak Vepar cluster by the then-nascent Tuchankan Empire, where it remained an important hub of military activity for the Empire, possessing no colonies but plenty of shipyards centered around Dor and several bases on Kelim: during the Krogan Rebellions, warlord and scientist Tukmar Okeer was rumoured to have been involved in the "Rothla Experiment", a test of an unknown weapon of mass destruction by the Empire that resulted in the destruction of the planet Rothla, shattering the planet into a field of debris and killing every krogan that had been planetside and was in orbit at the time, although Okeer later denied being involved in any such experiment: rumors later circulated that Rothla was destroyed as a result of a krogan super-biotic, while others claimed it was actually the krogan testing a reverse-engineered biotic weapon similar to those used exclusively by the rachni. Some conspiracy theories insist that no such weapon was involved at all, and that it was merely an accident as a result of the krogan testing a new form of self-sustaining energy that went catastrophically wrong. Whatever the case, the weapon or energy source was never identified and evidentially never pursued, as no mass production of it began and no surviving records exist today.
After the Rebellions and the collapse of the Empire, the CDEM quarantined Rothla and oversaw the decommissioning of all remaining krogan military assets in the system before withdrawing to positions over Tuchanka, although it had scheduled patrols throughout the system as part of its demilitarization enforcement duties. The United Krogan Clans would quickly reclaim the Dranek system in 2186 CE during the Reaper War, and the Tuchankan Confederacy would re-establish a military presence in the system following the conflict, rebuilding their shipyards and military bases and re-garrisoning them. It has remained under krogan control ever since.
