"It's the same old, tired dance we do every single time. They attack us, we beat them back. I don't know why they bother. At this rate, we'll win the war just by sitting here and swatting 'em."
— A krogan commander describing the Maginot Line assaults.

The Assaults on the Maginot Line, also known as the Maginot Line campaign to the Covenant, describes a series of attacks conducted by the Joint Crusader Navy on the Dominion-held Maginot Line during the Terra-Rannochian War that began on 9 July 2217 CE and continued right up until they were concluded with the Battle of the Maginot Line on 27 March 2253 CE during the Dominion Civil War. The assaults encompass any and all attacks by the Covenant Navy upon the Maginot Line during this time period, such as major offensives and counteroffensives, small raids and skirmishes, and minor fleet and surface actions occurring near or within the Maginot Line. The assaults officially "began" in 2217 CE, a year and a half after the Post-Apocalyptic War ended and only a few months after the beginning of the Terra-Rannochian War, beginning with a large Covenant offensive as they attempted an early breakthrough of the Maginot Line, believing it to be incomplete and the Dominion to be still recovering from their losses in the previous war, allowing them to achieve an early victory and reclaim the territories they had to concede as per the terms of the Armistice of Titan. The offensive was a failure, being met with stiff resistance from the Dominion fleet and being forced to withdraw. After the battle, the Covenant Navy quickly reevaluated their current position and gave up attempting to break the Maginot Line, instead engaging Dominion forces in a defensive action that proved reasonably successful: despite this, occasional offensives against the Line did occur, some failing while smaller raids did achieve breakthroughs, although they would eventually be checked. One example of such a successful raid was the Parnitha skirmish in 2251 CE, where the 18th Contingent of the Fleet of Bellerophon, consisting of ten ships, managed to sneak past the Maginot Line's defenses and penetrated deep into Dominion territory, although they'd eventually be engaged by the CSV Pandorica over Feros and the entire contingent was destroyed. Such breakthroughs were common, with Covenant forces either being quickly intercepted, launching raids across Dominion territory before being finally intercepted, or launched raids behind enemy lines without impunity and successfully escaped back to their own lines. Such instances were not common however, with the vast majority of instances resulting in Covenant defeats as they attempted to probe the Line for weaknesses only to be beaten back time and time again.

The assaults on the Maginot Line on their own were eventually a tactical Dominion victory. The Covenant never achieved a breakthrough in the 36 years the assaults were intermittently taking place, and this status quo was maintained the entire time despite occasional breakthroughs. With the destruction of Titan during the Dominion Civil War in March 2253 CE at the hands of the Dominion loyalists and their Ark, the Covenant was thrown into chaos, and a powerful warlord managed to seize control of the Navy, launching a massive offensive against the Maginot Line that culminated in the Battle of the Maginot Line. This proved to be the final assault on the Line waged by the Covenant, as it resulted in the decisive destruction of the Covenant Navy, routing their remaining forces from their field and ending the threat they posed to the Dominion for good, although the Dominion suffered substantial casualties in the process. Despite this, only minutes later, the Dominion loyalists would also join the battle and finally broke through the weakened Maginot Line, quickly turning the victory into a defeat. Regardless, with the end of the battle the Covenant Navy was shattered and with it the Terra-Rannochian War was considered over, especially as the Covenant collapsed shortly thereafter.
