The Ascension-class dreadnought was a classification of dreadnought that served in the Navy of the Republics from 2115 CE to 2215 CE, and was the first and only class of dreadnought the asari military ever fielded. Before 2115 CE, the asari had never built any dreadnoughts of their own, as their naval strength rested in its mobility, relying on lighter capital ships and interdiction vessels to harass the enemy and wittle them down with bug bites. Dreadnoughts were the antithesis of this strategy: slow, cumbersome, and requiring numerous escorts, not to mention slowing fleet movements. However, it was clear to the asari these tactics would not cut it anymore, especially with the Turian Hierarchy leaving the galaxy in awe of its massive fleets in its fleet demonstrations in the Attican Traverse in 2098 CE. In response, the DPAR began work on their own dreadnought design, eventually coming up with the Ascension-class design, which was slated to be bigger and more powerful than any of the turian dreadnoughts that had ever been deployed. The ship's final design made it the largest vessel in the galaxy, both in gross tonnage and size. Its arsenal was boasted to be awesome as well, and the asari showed off the first ship of the class, the Destiny Ascension, in June of 2115 CE in a shakedown run that showed the galaxy the asari navy was still a force to be reckoned with.
By 2183 CE, the asari navy had built and commissioned twenty Ascension-class vessels in keeping with the Treaty of Farixen. The head of this class, the Destiny Ascension, was the flagship of the Citadel Defense Fleet, and all fleets of the asari navy, with the exception of the Second Fleet (which held stubbornly to the "fast is better" mantra) had an Ascension-class vessel for a flagship. The Destiny Ascension proved itself at the Battle of the Citadel, where it absorbed enormous amounts of punishment from geth ships attacking it, while also scoring over a dozen enemy kills. All twenty would go on to fight in the Reaper War, where they also performed admirably, and once again in the Post-Apocalyptic War. After the asari defeat, the Dominion rounded up what remaining Ascension-class ships remained, most of them lifeless hulks due to battle or scuttling, and decommissioned and scrapped them in 2215 CE.
The ship was named after the Age of Ascension in asari mythology. Perhaps ironically, this belief, known as Ascensionism, was unknowingly referring to the Reapers.
