Armstrong is a cluster located in the core of the Attican Traverse, right inside the sector universally known as the Skyllian Verge. Neither owned by the Council, Terminus Systems, Geth, Batarian Hegemony or Systems Alliance, the Armstrong cluster is untouched in terms of civilization, but is seen by the Alliance as an area of strategic value, as any enemy controlling it would have a straight shot into Alliance space. Brief skirmishes were fought along its rim during the Skyllian Blitz, but these engagements never escalated into direct confrontations.
The cluster was later used as a staging area for geth heretic forces planning an invasion of Alliance space during the Eden Prime War. A military campaign into this area stopped this invasion, and the Alliance used this as an excuse to establish permanent listening posts and military bases in the cluster, all but declaring it a territory of the Systems Alliance. This lasted until 2186 CE, when the Alliance withdrew its forces from the cluster in response to the sudden collapse of the Batarian Hegemony. The cluster barely saw the devastation of the Reaper War, but UGC forces made use of its abandoned Alliance facilities to set up firebases and secret supply depots. Following the Post-Apocalyptic War, the military presence was largely reduced, and numerous colonization programs turned the cluster into a thriving community.
The cluster is named after Neil Armstrong, the American astronaut who was the first human to walk on the moon in 1969 CE.
