- "We fought hard, we bled a lot, and we won. We destroyed slavery on Anhur. But our war was long, and now we pay for it."
- — Ex-Abolitionist discussing the consequences of the Anhur Civil War on the planet's economy.
Anhur (Farhi name that means "free") is the third planet of the Amun system in the Eagle Nebula. Settled in 2165 CE by both human and batarian settlers, Anhur was the first and only example in the galaxy of a joint human-batarian colony, a venture that was ultimately doomed to fail: after a decade of development and tension between their citizens, a batarian majority in the Anhur government voted to pass legislation that abolished the minimum wage in 2175 CE, effectively legalizing slavery on a human-dominated world. The Na'hesit shortly thereafter was formed to begin slaver operations on Anhur, which was the spark that lit the fires of civil war, with the human Abolitionist movement declaring war on the Na'hesit in 2176 CE, with the government's support: while the Abolitionists had the manpower, the Na'hesit had the military, as well as the secret backing of the Batarian Hegemony, although only initially. To make up the difference, the government hired PMCs to bolster Abolitionist ranks, and after two years of war, the Na'hesit were finally defeated and slavery abolished, but at the cost of much of the planet's infrastructure being laid to waste and the planet's economy in tatters. As per the Treaty of New Thebes, both the humans and batarians agreed to govern themselves, with the batarian half of the planet ruled under the People's Republic of Anhur, while the human half remained under the control of the Anhuric Colonial Republic, now entirely ruled by humans. The Na'hesit would attempt to restart the slave trade in 2182 CE, but were finally destroyed by the Anhuric Resistance in 2183 CE.
During the Reaper War, Anhur would be attacked by a medium-sized Reaper task force looking to pacify the planet. Lacking any navy from which to defend itself, the Reapers were left totally uncontested in space, making landings across the planet and quickly seizing the capital of New Thebes from the humans, followed by the batarian capital of Obrarn. Much of the human and batarian military forces retreated into the planet's arctic north pole, where both sides agreed to put aside their differences to resist the Reaper occupation. Regardless, the Reapers would quickly capture and convert much of the population into indoctrinated slaves or husks in their conversion camps, with little effective resistance from the disparate military forces on the planet. After the war, Anhur saw a sudden influx in trade as its untapped resources suddenly became highly sought after, with the New Council taking a sudden interest in the planet in order to deny its access to both the Galactic Dominion and Titan Covenant: New Council occupation forces, consisting of turian and krogan troops, landed on Anhur to assume peacetime security, an act which angered both the batarians and humans on the planet, with both sides having long since left behind the tribalistic rivalry of their respective governments: when the Post-Apocalyptic War broke out, these tensions only got worse as the New Council began establishing a larger presence on the planet, including military installations. In 2210 CE, with the Covenant launching a successful offensive, Anhur saw its opportunity and began open revolt, starting with riots in the streets and following with open war. Batarian and human militias clashed with New Council forces across the planet, tying them up in conflicts across the planet, and despite being close to crushing the rebellion, the New Council was forced to withdraw and abandon the planet when their fleet was defeated outside the system by a Covenant fleet. Shortly thereafter, the Covenant assumed control and annexed Anhur, establishing a permanent occupation force, although Anhur welcomed them with open arms. While the Covenant attempted to convert the population to Apexism, most rejected it, despite being largely in support of the Covenant occupation.
Following the Dominion Civil War, Anhur was finally liberated by a UGR task force sent to remove the Covenant loyalists holding onto the planet. Following liberation of the planet, the UGR occupied Anhur only for as long as it took to re-establish its planetside government before pulling out again, leaving a token force to assist with re-building before it too pulled out. To this day, Anhur remains an independent republic, the only known example in the galaxy of a prosperous joint human-batarian colony.
