The 798th Task Group was a semi-constant detachment of the Fleet of Bellerophon of the Joint Crusader Navy. First activated on 16 October 2218 CE, the 798th task group, usually containing between twelve to seventeen vessels at its time of operation, would be intermittently formed and employed in series of operations and raids conducted by the Covenant Navy throughout the Terra-Rannochian War, largely utilized as a force reconnaissance and strike element of the larger Fleet of Bellerophon, and thus usually consisted of corvettes and frigates, and was led by a destroyer. The 798th would usually operate in concert with other task groups during raids or, in the case of larger offensive or defensive operations, would be used as a support element for the larger fleet, either harassing enemy flanks, exploiting enemy weaknesses, operating behind enemy lines or kept as reserves. The ships that comprised the 798th were constantly changing, and the unit would be activated and deactivated in service to its ad-hoc nature, never serving as a standing unit and its objectives always shifting. In many campaigns, the 798th would suffer heavy casualties or be completely wiped out, leading to its temporary deactivation before it would later be reactivated with fresh forces for a new operation.
The 798th would be employed for the final time during Operation Basilisk. Following the operation, the 798th was assigned to patrol duties in the Crescent Nebula until March 25 2253 CE, where it was deactivated and absorbed back into the Fleet of Bellerophon, shortly before the Covenant Navy's final assault on the Maginot Line on 27 March.
