The 17th Shock Troops Company was a Systems Alliance Marine Corps combat unit attached to the 4th Shock Troops Battalion and commanded by Major Norman Kyle. The unit was trained at the Systems Alliance Marine Corps Barracks on Ferris Fields, where it was then stationed in Valhalla on Elysium as part of the 52nd Valhalla Garrison. Kyle had his company retreat during the Battle of Elysium, before then ordering it back to participate in evacuation of the civilian populace. Even then, his superiors could see that he was unable to wrap his head around his own command, and hoped that having his company in the vanguard during the First Battle of Torfan would give him the necessary chance to show off his command ability.
Unfortunately, this proved to work against Alliance command, as a combination of pressure from the brass to perform, miscommunication with the fleet in orbit and overall strategic arrogance, eventually led to Kyle having his company charge the batarian fortifications in the open. As a result, all members but Shepard were slaughtered before Alliance forces could reinforce them.
